West Chester USGA’s 2024

Lynne and I had a great visit  to the USGA’s in West Chester University near Philadelphia for Chelsea's last meet of her first season starting April 12. Having just returned from Las Vegas on business the night before, Lynne and I drove up in spaceship while Tom worked and Lynne drove. After quick hamburgers downtown at a college burger joint, we headed to the field house. 

A nice student found us wandering the campus and took us to the field house. At 1400 the semi finals began. Chelsea received a 9.625 on bars. The team struggled, but would get second place out of three putting them into the finals the next day. After the meet we all went to PF Changs. The service with so many people was slow, but we did not mind since we were hanging out with Chelsea. Afterward we all went back to our hotels. We got to play Qwirkle with Chris and Brenda Wallace, Claire's parents. Unfortunately we were rude and beat them.

On Saturday, we decided we would investigate Kennett Square the "Mushroom Capital of the World" with Chris and Brenda. We visited Phillips Mushroom Farms and learned about how mushrooms are grown and bought a big box of mushrooms. Yummy. Next we ate at Capriotti's sandwich shop for the first time ever, before running back to West Chester for the finals.

The field house was full of energy and people when we arrived to see TWU, West Chester, Lindenwood, and Air Force face off. Chelsea did great increasing her score to a 9.725. Air Force knew they needed to improve their performance from the day before and indeed they did. Claire did a high scoring, clutch beam routine, and Air Force ended the day in third place. We were so proud of them all.

It was too late to go to dinner with the team so we gave Chelsea a big hug and we blasted off in Spaceship.

She and Austin live nearby, which means she still pops in to “borrow” food, batteries, and Kombucha. We love Austin and are so happy for them. Abigail is halfway through her second year teaching mischievous but wonderful 3rd graders. Lydia had knee surgery in the spring to reconfigure some parts, but bounced back quickly. By summer, she was off to Alaska for the internship of a lifetime, studying how climate change is affecting Arctic shipping routes. She and Tom also squeezed in day hikes in West Virginia and an unforgettable whitewater kayaking adventure. Lydia graduates from the Coast Guard Academy this spring and will likely head to San Francisco to serve on a large cutter. It all started months ago when Lydia spotted something magical—Hamilton was coming to Hartford in the fall. For a family that had belted out its soundtrack while scrubbing dishes for years, this was big. But there was a twist: Lydia’s senior soccer game was scheduled for the same period.
