Lydia's summer leave 2024

 Lydia was home for a week hanging out with the fam. She got home on Saturday and Abigail had arrived from Spain the day before. When she got home she found her dress for Angela’s wedding waiting for her. 

Tuesday and Wednesday morning we went to ocean city staying at the princess Royale. The days were nice though not particularly warm. But we made it into the water for about fifteen minutes then spent the balance of the beach time sunning, walking, playing games, eating, and talking. Bonus: no one got sunburned’








Tuesday evening we played putt putt golf and walked about three miles on the boardwalk. We had Julia’s famous cannolis and fudge from the candy kitchen. 
Wednesday Lydia’s friend Julia came by. They fished with Jake Gallaher’s gear and caught a catfish in the river. That evening they met up with another coastie. Thursday night they and Abigail went to Barcade in Annapolis. 
Thursday meme had a second kidney stone surgery, her third surgery in two weeks. It worked out fine and we were already planning to visit her that weekend so we headed up on Friday and made it there in time for visiting hours. Meme was so glad to see us. When I say us, mostly I mean Lydia, of course. 



Saturday we slept in at meme’s house and then went over to the hospital where we played games and talked until evening. Matt and the kids had showed up in the afternoon as well. We bid adieu to meme and went back to Matt’s to make dinner. After dinner the kids all got in the pool but the parents were too cold or scared or boring to get in. 



Lydia had to leave at 0530 Sunday morning so we were all up early to wistfully pray her a good trip back and a successful time with the swabs

She and Austin live nearby, which means she still pops in to “borrow” food, batteries, and Kombucha. We love Austin and are so happy for them. Abigail is halfway through her second year teaching mischievous but wonderful 3rd graders. Lydia had knee surgery in the spring to reconfigure some parts, but bounced back quickly. By summer, she was off to Alaska for the internship of a lifetime, studying how climate change is affecting Arctic shipping routes. She and Tom also squeezed in day hikes in West Virginia and an unforgettable whitewater kayaking adventure. Lydia graduates from the Coast Guard Academy this spring and will likely head to San Francisco to serve on a large cutter. It all started months ago when Lydia spotted something magical—Hamilton was coming to Hartford in the fall. For a family that had belted out its soundtrack while scrubbing dishes for years, this was big. But there was a twist: Lydia’s senior soccer game was scheduled for the same period. Instead of choosing one over the other, a plan was hatched—why not do both? So, on a crisp Friday morning, the spaceship (our trusty car) launched toward Connecticut. But this wasn’t just a family trip—it had a business twist. First stop: Wayne, New Jersey, to check out a used laminator Ivan had found. It was right off our route, so we met the seller at the local library. He was an hour late, and we nearly left, but just as we were about to give up, he arrived.
